Three Ways to Upgrade Your Windows. One Honest Recommendation.
WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Most window companies sell one thing: whatever they make the most money on. We do it differently. Every home we visit gets a straight assessment of the frames, sills, stucco, and existing glass, then a recommendation based on what will actually perform best for the budget. Sometimes that's a new insulated glass unit (see our insulated glass and custom glass services in the High Desert). More often in the High Desert, it's a Milgard retrofit window. And when the old frames are failing, it's a full-frame replacement done right.
What We Install
- Milgard retrofit windows

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS
IG Unit vs. Retrofit vs. Full-Frame Windows: What's the Difference?
All three options put new glass in your wall, but they solve very different problems. Here's how they compare, in plain English.
Option 1: Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) Replacement
What it is: We remove only the sealed glass pane (two or three panes of glass with a spacer and insulating gas between them) and install a new one in your existing frame. The frame, sash, and trim stay put.
Best for:
- Fogged or cloudy glass caused by a failed seal
- Frames that are still solid, square, and operating smoothly
- Newer windows (roughly 15 years old or less) that are still worth keeping
Keep in mind: A new IGU restores clarity and insulation, but it can't fix drafty frames, worn weatherstripping, or windows that stick. If the frames are tired, you're putting new glass in an old window.
Option 2: Retrofit Windows (Insert Replacement)
What it is: We remove the old sash and glass, leave the existing frame in the wall, and install a brand-new Milgard window with a retrofit flange that covers the old frame. No stucco cutting, no drywall damage, no repainting the exterior.
Best for:
- Older aluminum or single-pane windows common in High Desert homes
- Stucco homes where you don't want to tear into the exterior
- Homeowners who want a full window upgrade with less cost and less mess
Keep in mind: Because the new window sits inside the old frame, you lose a small amount of glass area. The existing frame must be structurally sound with no water damage behind it.
Option 3: Full-Frame Window Replacement
What it is: We remove everything down to the rough opening: glass, sash, frame, and fin. Then we install a new Milgard window with fresh flashing and waterproofing, and patch the surrounding stucco or siding.
Best for:
- Rotted, warped, or water-damaged frames
- Changing the size, shape, or style of a window opening
- Remodels where the exterior or interior is already being updated
Keep in mind: Full-frame is the most complete fix and the most involved install. Expect more labor, exterior patching, and a higher investment than retrofit.
| IG Unit Replacement | Retrofit Window | Full-Frame Replacement | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What's replaced | Glass only | Sash, glass, and new frame inside old frame | Entire window down to the studs |
| Existing frame | Stays | Stays (covered) | Removed |
| Stucco / siding work | None | None | Patch and repair required |
| Energy upgrade | Glass only | Full window | Full window + new flashing |
| Glass area | Same | Slightly smaller | Same or larger |
| Install time | Fastest | About a day for most homes | Longest |
| Investment | $ | $$ | $$$ |
| Best when | Frames are solid, glass is fogged | Frames are sound, windows are outdated | Frames are damaged or openings are changing |
Not sure which one your home needs? That's literally our job.

- Vanity mirrors
- Glass tabletops
- Glass shelving
- Cabinet glass
- Glass partitions
- Decorative glass

- Specialty glass for residential and commercial projects
Every piece is measured to fit your space.
Can you replace a broken tabletop or custom-cut a new one?
Yes. We can replace broken glass tabletops or fabricate a brand-new tabletop in the size, shape, edge finish, and thickness that best fits your furniture. We also offer tempered glass when additional strength is recommended.
Do you install custom mirrors for bathrooms, gyms, and home gyms?
Absolutely. We install custom mirrors for:
- Bathrooms
- Home gyms
- Fitness centers
- Dance studios
- Salons
- Closets
- Living spaces
- Commercial buildings
Each mirror is custom measured and professionally installed.
How much does custom glass or a custom mirror cost?
Pricing depends on several factors, including:
- Glass size
- Thickness
- Edge finish
- Tempered or laminated glass
- Installation requirements
Most custom projects require a free on-site measurement before an accurate quote can be provided.
Can you match an existing piece of glass or mirror?
In many cases, yes. We work hard to match existing glass thickness, tint, edge profiles, and mirror styles so replacements blend in with the surrounding design whenever possible.
Is tempered glass required for my project?
Some applications require tempered safety glass to meet building codes or improve durability. We'll recommend the correct type of glass based on where it will be installed and how it will be used.
How long does it take to receive custom glass?
Every project is different, but once measurements are complete and materials are ordered, most custom glass projects are completed as quickly as possible. During your estimate, we'll provide a realistic timeline based on your specific project.
Do you offer free estimates for custom glass projects?
Yes. High Desert Window and Glass provides free estimates throughout the High Desert region and surrounding areas. After measuring your project and discussing your goals, we'll provide a detailed, no-obligation quote.
Why choose High Desert Window and Glass for custom glass installation?
Customers choose High Desert Window and Glass because we focus on quality workmanship, honest service, and dependable installations. With over 20 years of industry experience, we take pride in clean installations, custom craftsmanship, and helping customers find the right glass solution for their home or business.

What's the difference between an IG unit, a retrofit window, and a full-frame window?
An IG unit replacement swaps only the sealed glass inside your existing window. A retrofit window replaces the whole window (sash, glass, and a new frame) inside your old frame without cutting stucco. A full-frame replacement removes everything down to the rough opening and installs a new window with new flashing. We'll recommend the right one after inspecting your home.
Why is my window glass foggy between the panes?
Fog or haze between the panes means the seal on your insulated glass unit has failed and moisture has gotten in. If the frame is still in good shape, a new IG unit restores clear glass. If the windows are older or drafty, a retrofit window is usually the smarter investment.
Are retrofit windows as good as full-frame replacement?
For most High Desert homes with sound aluminum frames and stucco exteriors, yes. A Milgard retrofit window gives you the same glass, energy performance, and warranty as a full-frame install, without the cost and mess of stucco repair. Full-frame is the better choice when frames are damaged or you're changing the opening size.
Will retrofit windows damage my stucco?
No. Retrofit windows are designed to install from the inside of the existing frame, so your stucco and exterior paint stay intact.
How long does window installation take?
Most retrofit projects are completed in a single day. Full-frame replacements take longer because of exterior patching. We'll give you a clear timeline during your estimate.
Are you a Milgard dealer?
Yes. High Desert Window and Glass is a Milgard Certified Dealer. Our most popular retrofit window is the Milgard Tuscany Series, a premium vinyl window built for Western climates and backed by the Milgard Full Lifetime Warranty. You can see it in person at our Hesperia showroom.
What warranty comes with my new windows?
Milgard windows are covered by the Milgard Full Lifetime Warranty. If an issue ever comes up, we inspect it in person first and handle the warranty claim with Milgard for you.
Do new windows meet California Title 24 energy requirements?
Yes. The Milgard windows we install meet California's Title 24 energy code for replacement windows, and we'll help you choose the right Low-E glass package for your home's sun exposure.
How much do replacement windows cost?
Cost depends on the number of windows, sizes, product series, glass package, and whether you choose retrofit or full-frame installation. We provide a detailed, no-obligation quote after a free in-home measurement, and financing is available for as little as $150 down.
What areas do you serve?
We install windows throughout the High Desert, including Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Oak Hills, Phelan, Adelanto, and surrounding communities.
